When Nothing Works For Bad Breath: This Just Might Help!

Morris Last Updated: March 7, 2020 0

Having a chronic bad breath, aka halitosis, can be very frustrating and embarrassing. And what’s even more frustrating is when you’ve tried every suggested remedy and nothing works for you. But I’ve got one more natural remedy to suggest, which I bet you haven’t yet tried or even heard about.

I will be speaking based on my personal experience, and what has effectively worked for my bad breath problem are two natural substances called chlorella and spirulina.

What Are Chlorella and Spirulina?

Chlorella and spirulina are two different types of algae that grow in fresh and salt water. They are both widely used as a food and dietary supplement.

Chlorella is a green algae that is rich in chlorophyll, proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. It has many suggested health benefits including helping the body detox (get rid of toxins), enhancing the immune system, and others.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is also packed with numerous nutrients including protein, vitamins (particularly B vitamins), chlorophyll and others. It has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and it is believed to have several health benefits.

Because of their high nutrient content, chlorella and spirulina are often called superfoods and people take them separately, combined together, or as part of a green powder.

My Personal Experience

I came across a chlorella and spirulina supplement while doing some random research. The general health claims include: boosts immunity, promotes detoxification, improves digestive function, increases energy, and provides the body with numerous important nutrients — among other suggested benefits.

Well, nothing exceptionally interesting since countless other supplements make similar claims, but then going through some of the user reviews, I spotted a few random reports here and there from people claiming that chlorella and spirulina helped them get rid of smelly breath and body odor issues. Having been suffering with persistent bad breath, that sounded interesting enough for me to give it a try myself, and so I did.

After a few weeks of supplementing with chlorella and spirulina, I did notice a significant improvement in my breath odor. I can’t say it completely cured the problem, but it is much better now and I feel more confident being around others without the funky smell.

How and why did these two algae end up useful for bad breath, I don’t know, nor could I find a definitive answer. In fact, other articles that talk about the benefits of chlorella and spirulina don’t mention anything about them being beneficial for bad breath problems.

But since constant foul-smelling breath is often associated with mouth bacteria, the most likely reasoning as to why chlorella and spirulina could help is that both have been shown to have antibacterial activity. [1][2]

Additionally, the green pigment chlorophyll that is present in both of these algae is believed to help combat foul mouth and body odor, although there is no conclusive scientific evidence to support this claim.

Usage Tips and Notes

The first thing you’ll need is some chlorella and spirulina in powder form, not the tablets. They can be bought separately or combined in a 50/50 blend.

One of the good stores where you can buy bulk herbs and supplements is Starwest Botanicals. They sell organic spirulina and organic chlorella (cracked cell walls) at reasonable prices.

Here’s how I use it:

  1. Fill a small cup with about 1 inch of lukewarm water — not hot, not cold, just slightly warm.
  2. Add 1/2 teaspoon of chlorella and spirulina combined, or 1/4 teaspoon chlorella + 1/4 teaspoon spirulina, and give it a quick gentle stir.
  3. Drink the solution. You’ll notice a green residue on your tongue afterward, which you should keep there for a while as I think it helps eliminate the bacteria. So don’t eat or drink anything for about half an hour.
  4. I usually drink this once a day, shortly after breakfast, but sometimes I also drink it in the afternoon or at night.

Notes:

  1. Unless you like seaweed, you will find the taste rather unpleasant, but it’s tolerable.
  2. There are different causes of bad breath that may require different treatments and I make no claims or promises that this remedy will work for you. I think in my case it has more to do with mouth bacteria that won’t go away with simple tooth brushing and tongue scraping.
  3. If you don’t notice improvement on the first day, don’t give up yet! Keep taking it for a few days and you may start getting results.
  4. I don’t think I need to remind you how important it is to brush your teeth and scrape/brush your tongue every day, in the morning and at night, to freshen up your breath!
